Classic Arcade Game News: January 2007

Classic Games Reborn!

Retro Remakes

Retro Remakes, the largest game remakes community on the internet has announced the winners of the Retro Remakes "Big 2006 Compo". This means that a slew of new Classic Remakes are available for your downloading pleasure. Congrats to all of the winners, especially those that took home some new X-Arcade™ toys from it!

The website has also just gotten a bit of a makeover - switched over to Wordpress and generally gave the whole thing a lick of paint. It looks great, and they have also announced that a new easier to navigate and fully searchable game remakes section is coming soon. We can't wait!

The Greatest Video Game Collection EVER!

Heaven This is not a warehouse, though it could be. This is not a rental store, one could only wish the local ones carried this many titles. This is not heaven, but if it was that would be sweet.

This collection is so big, this one picture simply does it no justice. Luckily there are plenty more, just click the link and pretend you are there...

Focus Group: Child's Play II

Zelda Classic Ocarina of Time in 2D

What happened when EGM printed that Donkey Kong is "lame." Tetris is "boring." Space Invaders "needs a superbomb or something." And why play Pong when it's more fun to "jump up and down on one foot"? It became their most popular article ever!

EGM and 1up.com rounded up nine children of the PlayStation generation—ages 9 to 12—and forced them to play a variety of titles from the late'70s to the mid-'80s.

And now they're doing it again with a new batch of scrubs and a new bucket of classic games. If you grew up with these classics prepare to feel very old.

The Mario You've Never Heard Of...With ROM Download!

Zelda Classic Ocarina of Time in 2DA piece of gaming history whose existence has until now escaped even the most supposedly definitive of books and web archives - a lost Super Mario Brothers game has been discovered!

Called "Super Mario Brothers Special", the game ran on the obscure Japanese PC-8001 computer, and was created in 1986 by veteran developers Hudson Soft. Looking and sounding very much like the arcade/NES original, SMB Special has two major differences to its parent.

Firstly, it contains a complete new set of levels, different from both the first game and the Japan-only "Super Mario Bros 2" which later appeared on the SNES Mario Allstars compilation. And secondly, rather than having a scrolling display in the manner of the other Mario games, SMBS features a flick-screen format which changes the gameplay significantly.

Despite these changes, and the primitive hardware the game was running on, SMB Special is an entertaining game, significantly harder than the original and a challenge even in comparison to the Japanese SMB2. But hey, don't take our word for it...

Goldeneye: Source Beta Released!

Digital Downloads

In December 2005 we told you about Goldeneye Source, a 22-man team working to modernize Goldeneye 64 with the Half-Life 2 Source Engine, and an Alpha was released. Just when you thought the project at a standstill, they followed up last month with another present, the beta!

The mod, which requires a Source-based game to work, has already garnered much attention over the years for the level of detail in its stage design and weaponry. The beta version is much closer to a perfect remake of the game that revolutionized the FPS.

Metal Slug Anthology Wii Released

Metal Slug AnthologyThe Metal Slug™ franchise offers some of the most hardcore traditional shooter gameplay to date, and is jam-packed with awesomely animated 2D art. It's kind of like Contra™ with a sense of humor. For arcade fans this compilation has been a long, long time coming.

Over the years there have been seven main Metal Slug games, labeled one through six, and Metal Slug X. For the first time, these six games are finally in the same package together and readily available somewhere other than an arcade or PC emulator (tisk tisk).

The reviews say that they just couldn't come up with a better way to play this classic with the Wiimote. Luckily though, you can play it the way it was meant to be played, yes the X-Arcade™ works with this game!

IGN's Best of 2006

IGN's Best of 2006Well, we blinked and 2006 was gone. Where did it go and what happened? Well, IGN has their yearly summary for those of you who slept through it.

2006 was a busy year with the release of two new gaming systems -- Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii -- as well as the dawning of two new video platforms: HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Although this is a transition year both for videogames and the entertainment industry, we were certainly treated to some great games, movies, and CDs throughout 2006.
