Classic Arcade Game News: April 2008

Xbox 360™ Wiimote Deep In Development

Wii360

With the crazy success of the Wii™ due to it's groundbreaking motion controller, it didn't take long for Sony to jump in with a motion controller of their own just before launch of the PS3. This only leaves the Xbox™ 360 without a motion controller of their own.

While the Nintendo® Wii™ has had great success with a new crowd of casual and older gamers, it has left the core gamers feeling completely alone with their trivial online service and lack of next-gen graphics. Lack of voice chat, downloadable content for games, and unfriendly Friend Codes are among the major drawbacks.

It could only be a matter of time before Microsoft® would realize the potential being missed here and consider marrying a Wiimote with their powerful HD powerhouse and near-perfect Xbox Live™ service. First there was talk from IGN of Codename Fusion coming to PC and next-gen consoles. Next came word from EGM Mag's Rumor Mill stating that another Halo™ game was in the works (not Halo Wars™, though an RTS would be a perfect fit), and that it may use a motion controller that Microsoft® originally wanted used on Halo 3™. Then more recently Next-Gen reported that the company responsible for the prototype designs of the Nintendo® Wii-mote, Gyration®, was now working on a Wiimote for the 360 due by the end of the year.

And as if all of that rumor was not enough, now MTV.com is backing all of this speculation with exclusive word that Microsoft has indeed been working on their motion controller since last summer, and that it will in fact be released by the end of this year! Wiimote control + HD Graphics with Live = no compromise, true next-gen gaming...sounds good to us! Full details after the jump.

Wii360 Lives!

One source is also claiming that the code name of the project is "Newton" (as in Newtonian Physics relating to gravity, inertia and acceleration), though there is no way to verify this.

No, this is not an April Fool's joke.

The Best 50 Games of the 1980s

50 Best 80's GamesThe 80's may have been the generation that truly started gaming. Next Generation really puts it into perspective. "At the beginning of the 1980s, videogames were about simple arcade affairs or bleeping, wood-veneered consoles. By its end, the world had moved onto Super Nintendo, 32-bit Amiga and complex, character-based, multi-genre entertainment behemoths."

Here Next -Gen celebrates the 50 best games of the 80s that stand as true masterpieces. It's a great way to find the best classics for your home arcade collection.

AVAULT's Top Casual PC Games of 2007

AVAULT's Best Free Indie Games Despite the unprecedented explosion of blockbuster retail game releases, the casual computer games market — largely operating through Internet downloads rather than boxed products in stores — continues to flourish. These titles generally sell for a lower price, with lower system requirements and lower minimum time commitment to learn how to play, and they arguably provide more bang for the buck then their retail counterparts.

So for the eighth year in a row, while other game sites focus on conventional retail offerings, The Adrenaline Vault unearths for your playing pleasure the very best hidden treasures casual gaming has to offer. To select the 12 award winners for 2007, they spent many hours scouring hundreds of titles developed in countries all over the world, and you get to reap the benefits. Go play!

Metroid™ II Reborn

You may recall just a year ago we told you about two cool Metroid™ indie games Metroid Prime™ 2D and 'Megatroid'. Now check out another fan made remake of the underrated Metroid™ II: Return of Samus for the original Game Boy™. While retro game remakes are nothing new, this is one of the best ever.

You can check out the video of the game in action above. Or better yet, if you want to try this remake for yourself, it's only a click away. While it's only a tech demo and not the completed version, you will be impressed.

Pac-Man™ Will Pay!

Gonna Beat Pac-ManIf you have spent any real amount of time in front of Pac-Man™, you know of frustration that can make blood squirt from your eyes! These guys took that frustration to a new level in this cartoon music video titled I'm Gonna Beat Pac-Man™ that you can bang your head to (not for those with virgin ears).

I'm Gonna Beat Pac-Man™!

We could have saved him some frustration had he seen the 'How to beat Pac-Man™' guide.

Weird Stuff?

Weird TankstickPCWorld Assistant Editor Greg Adler takes a look at the X-Arcade™ Tankstick controller, how weird, right? Not so much.

You may recall that PC World's sister site MacWorld reviewed the Tankstick, which can be read on the PCWorld website. Now that's kinda weird.

But all the same, it's an interesting video to see PCWorld themselves give it a go. Check it out.
